The skin is the largest organ in the body and there is no question that it is the most exposed to external factors that affect its complexion.

Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, Co-Founder of Dr. Loretta joins Hello Beauty and sheds light on what these external factors are that are affecting 85% of skin aging. As a leading board-certified dermatologist with over 40 years of experience, her expertise, along with her anti-aging skincare line called Dr. Loretta, teaches us their valuable philosophy of “Skin Unexposed”. While talking to Dr. Loretta, I learned that we should avoid or at least lessen the exposure of our skin to pollution, light, climate, and irritants. I learned that indoor pollution is worse than outdoor due to paint, stove top cooking gases, tobacco smoke, household products, formaldehyde, lead, etc! The alarming realization is that we spend most of our time indoors!

What causes skin aging?

With just the indoor pollution already affecting our skin greatly, we must not forget that just being in front of our computers and cellphone, and even being LED and energy efficient fluorescent lights, is causing our skin to age and acquire photo damage. This is due to the high energy visible light (HEV) that are emitted.

The hot and cold weather is another factor that contributes to aging. Cold weather causes the skin to be dry and itchy while the hot cause the skin to be oily and breakout. Our air-conditioning and heating systems cause the skin to be dry. Moreover, ingredients that are present in products can be irritants to the skin that it can cause skin conditions to worsen.
